For many avid anglers, fishing is a family affair. As with any activity, parents can’t help but slip in a few sage words of wisdom or a few life lessons when their child is impatiently waiting for a bite or being tempted to leave trash at your favorite outdoor spot. Make the most of your time together with these life lessons only fishing can teach!

Inspiration and creativity can be found anywhere. If you’re a fly fishing fanatic, you may have already started teaching your tot to tie his or her own flies. While this may be a lesson in fine motor skills or hard work, it can also be a lesson in creativity. Allow your child the latitude to choose his or her own materials and create a beautiful (and hopefully effective) fly that will land you that big catch!

There’s beauty in solitude. In our fast-paced world, we are constantly connected and bombarded with information and noise. After a long week at work for you and a long week at school for your children, coming home to a weekend filled with more time in front of the computer or television is not always the best option. Fishing teaches kids to find solitude and beauty in the quiet reverence of nature. You can also take this opportunity to throw in old favorite such as “leave a place better than you found it” or “the early bird gets the worm.”

Be prepared. It’s not just a great song from “The Lion King.” Fishing teaches great lessons in preparedness, including planning ahead on what supplies you will need depending on which type of water you’ll be fishing in and what type of fish you’re trying to catch. Let your kid help pack the your gear or fix lunch before heading out! This is also a great opportunity to talk about teamwork.

Protect our environment. It's never too early to teach our children the importance of taking care of our planet.  It can be a simple fish lesson like: keep 'em wet, or a conversation about conservation: protecting our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. Fly fishing is a lifetime sport and we want healthy water to pass on to future generations!

Most important enjoy your family time and have fun!
