Girls Weekend: Next time you’re planning a get together with friends, make it an adventure! A camping trip with the girls is sure to bring memories that will last a lifetime. Fireside conversations under the stars are the best kind of discussions and sleeping in the great outdoors relaxes better than any spa. Better still, it is a cost-effective adventure meaning you can double up on s’mores supplies!
Mother-Daughter Adventure: One of the best ways to get the new year started on the right foot is by getting energized. Include your mother, daughter, or both in a fun day trip outdoors to clear away any last bit of seasonal tension. An afternoon filled with fresh air, laughter, and quality time out of the house can be a great way to mix adventure with family fun!
Solo Trip: One of the most thrilling adventures you can take is a solo trip. Be it a weekend in a border state or a more extended trip a little further away, solo travel brings an invigoration like no other. A peaceful fishing trip or a walk around a state park can be the perfect prescription for the winter blues. Time spent basking in nature’s glory can bring about clarity in even the most hectic of months. Even if you can just spare time enough for a day trip, the time to yourself will do wonders.
Here’s to finding the adventure in 2018!
]]>The holiday season is a time filled with food, family, and fun. Unfortunately, it is also a time of stress for most of us, and it can be a balancing act trying to get everything together in time for the festivities. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the overwhelming activity of the season and forget that it is supposed to be an enjoyable time. The best way to combat stress this time of year is to carve out some time for yourself in an active way.
As the weather gets colder and the to-do list gets longer, it is easy to make excuses as to why staying active is impractical. However, when you invest in yourself in this way, it helps to make this time of year much more bearable. You would be shocked at the impact a simple 30-minute run, jog, or walk can do for your frame of mind, especially when you are stressed out. Making time for physical activity will help bring more joy to everything you do, no matter how overwhelmed you may be.
While the kids are in school, right before work, or any moment of free time you can find can be an excellent opportunity to seize the day. Don’t limit yourself to walking, jogging, or running. If those are not your preferred ways to blow off some steam, there are endless options for physical activities to choose from. The important thing is to get moving, in any way that you want. Make your time yours again by utilizing it in the most beneficial way, leading to a happier holiday for everyone!
]]>As Christmas draws near, it’s time to start thinking about the gifts we want to receive and the ones we want to give. While the gift-receiving process is relatively simple, the gift giving can be a bit trickier. The pressure is on to find the perfect gift for each person, one that embodies how much you care and value their presence in your life. To make your job a little easier, we have compiled a list of the three best gifts for the active woman in your life. These presents are equal parts useful and thoughtful, and we know you will enjoy giving them just as much as the women in your life will appreciate receiving them!
Hopefully, this list makes Christmas shopping a little easier this year and at the very least inspires you to get excited about the holiday season!
]]>As we get older, it becomes more challenging to make time for our hobbies and passions. Between work and family, it can be hard to justify any alone time, especially when it comes to indulging in personal activities or interests.
]]>As we get older, it becomes more challenging to make time for our hobbies and passions. Between work and family, it can be hard to justify any alone time, especially when it comes to indulging in personal activities or interests. Here are some tips to help you integrate your passion into your everyday life.
Include your family. Nothing brings a family together more than shared interests. If your passion pertains to outdoor activities, this can be a great way to get your children involved in something you enjoy. Sharing a past time with your spouse can also be a great way to bond and can even double as date night! By getting your family involved, you are significantly increasing the odds that you will have time for your passion.
Any time is a good time. With the kids in school and their activities, you are likely to have some free time in between work and shuffling them around to squeeze in some time for yourself. While they are at practice or music lessons, you could get in a quick run, volunteer nearby, or anything you choose, turning your wait time to your advantage. Any spare moments in your day, no matter how small, can be used to cultivate what you love!
Be open about what you want. It is essential to let the people in your life know that your passions and hobbies are integral to your happiness. By expressing your wants and needs to those you care about, you are making it much easier to accomplish quality time devoted to something you love. This way, they can help make sure that you get the time you need to grow your passions.
It is so easy to let the joy in your life fall to the wayside to work on life’s responsibilities, but you don't have to choose one or the other. With a little compromise, working in some much needed time for your passions can be easier than you think and more beneficial than you realize!
]]>Biking is a great way to stay active, especially during the fall season. The benefits of cycling are endless but below are the four best reasons to get out on your bike!
]]>Biking is a great way to stay active, especially during the fall season. The benefits of cycling are endless but below are the four best reasons to get out on your bike!
1. The best kind of exercise is the kind that doesn’t feel like exercise at all. Biking is easily customizable to your level of fitness and is an excellent way to stay active without feeling overwhelmed.
2. The colder months bring a much more structured, hectic schedule with work and school than the warm and relaxed summer months. Busy days can make it hard to find time for exercise. Cycling is the perfect solution because you can bike to some of your closer errands, allowing you to accomplish daily tasks as well as squeezing in physical activity. As an added bonus, biking is environmentally friendly!
3. The fall season is known for its breathtaking scenery. Biking provides a welcome way to soak up the foliage in all of its glory. Bike trails offer a unique look at your community and what better time to explore them than this spectacular season.
4. The last benefit of biking just might be the best: the whole family can join in on this fun activity! A family bike ride is a great way to get everyone moving while also spending some quality time together.
Biking serves many purposes and is relatively low maintenance as far as outdoor activities go, which is ideal for anyone looking for a fun way to get moving!
]]>Fall is the ideal time to plan short, sweet family vacations. Not only has the weather cooled significantly, but the children will be anxious to get outside after days spent in the classroom.
]]>Fall is the ideal time to plan short, sweet family vacations. Not only has the weather cooled significantly, but the children will be anxious to get outside after days spent in the classroom. However, quick weekend vacations that please everyone can be hard to find. Below is a compiled list of fly fishing areas that have activities everyone in the family can enjoy!
Hazel Creek: Located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Hazel Creek is one of the best locations for fly fishing in North Carolina. Just down the road, the Annual Smoky Mountain Fly Fishing Festival is held each fall which brings vendors selling everything from art to fly fishing materials. In addition to the breadth of fly fishing culture, the areas around Hazel Creek are perfect for hiking, camping, and just about any water activities you could imagine.
Firehole River: Because of its home in the Wyoming part of the Yellowstone National Park, Firehole River is an obvious choice for family-friendly fun. The Park is full of fantastic fly fishing areas, but this river is especially perfect because of the three adjacent geysers. Enjoy an unforgettable family vacation with enchanting wildlife, breathtaking sights, and great fly fishing!
Beaver Kill River: This river is located in the Catskills of New York and boasts an impressive ranking as one of the best trout streams in America. The Catskills are the perfect playground for children of all ages and families will find no shortage of outdoor activities to keep them occupied. In addition to fly fishing, the nearby town of Roscoe, known as “Trout Town, USA,” boasts an impressive history and a handful of shops, the perfect intermission to any fishing excursion.
South Padre Island: South Padre Island is a well-known vacation spot that also has an impressive fly fishing scene. Located in the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas, this is a beach vacation and a fly fishing trip wrapped up in one. The best of both worlds, this is bound to encourage even the most reluctant teenager to join in on some family fun!
These vacation spots are only a tiny glimpse into the world of fly fishing in America but hopefully this list provided you with the inspiration to plan your next fall family vacation!
]]>As the days grow shorter and with cooler weather right around the corner, it is time to transition from our warm weather wardrobe to our fall favorites.
]]>As the days grow shorter and with cooler weather right around the corner, it is time to transition from our warm weather wardrobe to our fall favorites. It can be tricky to navigate the new season because it is not particularly hot or cold but somewhere in between. Luckily, layering can provide the perfect balance needed for the sometimes unpredictable fall days. With the addition of these three key pieces into your wardrobe, the changing of seasons won’t hinder your active lifestyle. Outdoor activities should be enhanced by the crisp air that fall brings, so whether you are going hiking or on a hayride, these layering essentials have got you covered!
With these layers, there is no need to sacrifice style for practicality. They can be worn together or interchanged with various outfits but either way, you will never have to worry about the chilly weather getting in the way of fall fun!
]]>Go for a brisk walk: Inexpensive and accessible, the simple act of walking provides a myriad of health benefits, including boosts to cardiovascular, bone and muscle health. According to the Centers for Disease Control, adding in 150 minutes of brisk walking a week is enough to improve your aerobic health. Walking can be easier on your joints than running, and the pace can give you ample time to take in the beauty of your surroundings, improving your mental health as well. Be sure you have appropriate footwear for the terrain, whether you're strolling the sidewalks of your neighborhood or hitting the trails of your local park.
Cycling: Just 30 minutes of riding a bike can burn as much as 372 calories, and you'll be working out an entirely different group of muscles than with just walking or running alone. You can even swap your car for a bike for your daily commute or to run errands around town, which is an excellent way to work in some exercise if you're always pressed for time. Take all necessary precautions when cycling, including obeying all traffic laws, wearing bright clothing, so you're visible to drivers, and always wearing a bike helmet.
Swimming: Lying poolside and splashing with the kids is one thing, but you can also turn your aquatic activities into health benefits with lap swimming. Swimming is ideal for people who have arthritis and other mobility issues, as it has an extremely low impact on joints, reduces the risk of injury from falls, and can help strengthen your core muscles.
As with any outdoor activity, be sure not to skimp on sunscreen protection, even as the temperature drops. Working out feels so much better when you can fill your lungs with fresh air.
]]>Hike your neighborhood national park: Leave the noise and the chaos of a crowded day at the beach behind and opt instead for a relaxing woodland walk at your nearest national park. Make it a day trip, or load up the outdoor gear for a night or two of camping. It's the perfect weather for it; summer's heat has gone, and the nights have not yet picked up autumn's chill.
Camp out in your backyard: You can avoid the traffic entirely by staying close to home and setting up and outdoor adventure right in your backyard. Break out the tent and sleeping bags, and roast marshmallows for s'mores over a fire pit (or even the classic Weber grill). It'll be that one last flavor of the summer season without having to fight the holiday crowds.
Plan a night of stargazing: Take in the wonders of the evening sky, with or without a telescope. All you need is a field far enough away from artificial lights, so only the twinkle of the heavens will shine through. Leave the electronics and glowing devices behind, but do look into a star chart ahead of time so you know what you're looking for.
Soon enough, the hustle and bustle of fall and the start of the next school semester will sweep away these quiet moments, so be sure to grab them while you still can!
]]>In today's always-connected world, it can sometimes feel like our cell phones and computers are a part of us instead of helpful tools to get a job done. No matter what's going on at the office or in the world of social media, sometimes it can be healthy to unplug and give your body and mind a reset. Here are just a few tips from Maven Fly on how to find your serenity away from the glow of electronic screens.
Move your workout outdoors. Break away from the gym and take your daily workout to your local neighborhood park. Breathing in fresh air during yoga or tai chi in the grass can definitely help you find your center. Plan a hike right around sunrise or sunset — that way, you'll be treated to the dramatic shift in sunlight. No 4K monitor can compare to the crisp beauty Mother Nature can provide.
Plan a picnic with loved ones. Eating meals together face to face trumps any FaceTime app for creating a real connection to the people in your life. Grab the kids, pack a basket full of healthy snacks (think apple slices and granola bars), and bring a blanket big enough to hold everybody. Bring along a Frisbee or a soccer ball to burn off some extra energy before the meal.
Share your passion for fly fishing. If there are special friends and family members in your life who haven't yet been introduced to the serenity that can be found from a day on the river, now would be a great time to teach them! Take them out to your favorite spot to practice the basics, from how to tie a fly to the right techniques for casting. Sure there's no high score or leader board, but you just might find yet another convert hooked on the fly-fishing lifestyle.
Screen time may be a fact of everyday life, but there are always opportunities to step away from it all, recharge, and reconnect to what matters. Take the time today to unplug.
]]>The number one tip for pulling off a wedding theme is don’t overdo it. Not every single detail has to be related to fly-fishing. The number one theme of a wedding should be, well, a wedding! Think of ways to incorporate the theme subtly. You don’t have to get married beside a lake (unless you just want to) to get the message across. For example, try incorporating some of your DIY fly ties in small areas, such as the boutonnieres, flower arrangements, and centerpieces. This will add a small, sweet detail without drawing attention away from the venue or the bride and groom. You could also incorporate some hidden details, such as fishing-inspired socks for the groom and groomsmen or even something more lasting like an inscription inside your wedding bands — “The Catch of a Lifetime” has a nice ring to it!
When you’re creating the seating chart for the reception, instead of numbering the tables, name them after the best fly-fishing catches. For example, instead of Table No. 1, your parents may be sitting at Table Rainbow Trout. The cake topper is another small embellishment that you can have fun with! Consider the classic “hooked” groom or something more creative like a customized topper that says “Reel Love.” Another fun reception idea — a fishing-themed signature drink. Lake water, anyone?
You can easily use fly-fishing props during your post-wedding photos, and you can also use your favorite pastime as inspiration for your wedding favors. The possibilities are endless! If you want to avoid a wedding theme altogether but still want your passion for fly-fishing to be part of your big day, consider sending out themed save-the-dates. Less formal than the actual invitations, save-the-date photoshoots are a time to show your silly side. Slip into your waders and have a ball!
]]>Prepare your list: There are endless possibilities to add to your scavenger hunt list, and a lot of it depends on where you plan to do your hunting. If you plan the hunt next to a river or stream, you can look for leaves and pine cones from specific trees, rocks of all shapes and colors, various birds and animals, and more. You might want to make sure everyone knows what poison ivy and poison oak look like beforehand, so they don't accidentally touch it during the hunt!
Dress for a day of outdoor exploring: Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are a must for any outdoor trek. Wear loose and comfortable clothing that allows for lots of movement, and dress in layers (and take along an umbrella or rain coat) for unexpected changes in weather. Bring bug spray and a small first aid kit to tend to any bruises, scrapes, or bites. Be sure everyone applies sunscreen, taking frequent breaks throughout the day to reapply.
Record your findings: Have your list attached to a sturdy clipboard with a pencil tied to it, and mark off your finds as you discover them. While taking a favorite leaf from your travels is one thing, for the most part, it's best to leave nature unspoiled. Instead of picking up the treasures you encounter, take a quick picture of them. You'll be able to keep your memories with you always without spoiling the habitat. You can make a positive difference in your community, however, if one of your scavenger list items is to pick up litter that others have carelessly discarded.
Happy hunting!
]]>1. Ditch the pool, and find your oasis close to home. While a day at the pool sounds relaxing in theory, it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Getting the kids up, dressed, slathered in sunscreen, and in the car, only to run into half of your town at the pool can be a drag. You were dreaming about laying by the water and working on your tan or the latest New York Times bestseller, but Susan from two streets over is talking your ear off instead. What a drag. This summer, do some research to find a new watering hole. Splash time doesn’t have to happen at the pool. Even if you can’t make it to the ocean, there is guaranteed to be a nearby lake, waterfall, stream, or hidden gem within a day’s drive. Pack up the family for a day exploring the outdoors, cooling off by the water, and enjoying a picnic lunch as a family. You won’t regret it.
2. Revamp the cookout by creating your own Olympic stadium. Your backyard just became the site of the 2017 Olympic Games. Before the burgers hit the grill, invite your friends and their kids over for some creative outdoor fun. Pool noodle obstacle course, tug-of-war, 50-yard dash — you name it, and it can be converted into a family-friendly event everyone will love. Take it up a notch by purchasing gold medals for the winners!
3. Elevate that summer workout by hitting the trails! If you’re a maven of fitness who has already conquered your neighborhood 5 and 10Ks, take things to the next level with ultra-running. Better for your joints because you’re not running on the pavement, ultra-running tackles long distances on unusual terrain. You’ll sweat your way to that summer body, and your boredom will evaporate with the gorgeous scenery that replaces your view from the treadmill.
]]>If you’re a maven mom looking for ways to get your kids active and outdoors this summer, look no farther than these tips from Maven Fly!
]]>1. Carve it into the schedule. If your summer runs on a perfectly planned schedule (and whose doesn't with summer ball leagues, meetings, work, games, and social commitments?), make outdoor time a priority by penciling it in. If spending time outside hiking, biking, swimming, or playing is already carved out for them, your kids may be more likely to put down the remote!
2. Get outside together. Why would your kids be enticed to get outdoors if you’re not setting the right example? Make outdoor time family time by planning exciting activities such as a picnic lunch, a friendly (or competitive!) game of kickball, a walk to the park, or day at the pool. Everything is better when you do it together!
3. Pay to play. If your kids are real couch potatoes, they may take some extra convincing. If you already give your children an allowance for completing their weekly chores, make spending at least two hours a day outdoors part of the list. No time outside, no allowance.
]]>1. Women in disguise served on the front lines as far back as the 1700s. There have been restrictions on female enlistment and service roles since the inception of organized armed forces. However, a woman named Deborah Sampson served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War for over a year under the name Robert Shurtliff before she was wounded and honorably discharged.
2. The first woman to receive a military pension served in the Revolutionary War. When Margaret Corbin’s husband was killed in 1779, she took over his position of manning a solo cannon and was seriously injured herself. She was awarded a disability pension by Congress for wounds incurred during military service. However, it was only one-half of a soldier’s pay. In 1804, Deborah Sampson was awarded this same pension.
3. Only one woman in U.S. history has been awarded the Medal of Honor. The U.S. military’s highest honor has been bestowed on more than 3,000 men and only one woman — Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Walker worked as a contract surgeon for the Union forces and was a prison of war to the Confederate Army in the 1800s. The award was revoked in 1917 and then restored in 1977.
4. Women were only recently granted permission to fight in ground combat. In 2013, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta withdrew the Direct Combat Exclusion Rule, which restricted women from serving in ground combat units.
Thank you to all the men and woman who sacrifice their comfort and safety to serve our country!
]]>Moms are life’s true superheroes, and since 1914, they have had their very own day carved out on U.S. calendars to prove it. They don’t just perform the standard care tasks that keep us up and running like cooking, cleaning, and organizing our lives. Many modern maven moms do this all while holding down a full-time job, volunteering in their communities, and maintaining some semblance of a social life. This Mother’s Day, do one better than a boring buffet lunch and a greeting card. Try these unique ways to celebrate to show the woman who gave you life just how much you care.
1. Plan a family trip. Whether it’s a weekend away at a location she’s always wanted to visit or a quick day trip, your mom will love knowing how much thought and planning went into her gift. If you can’t get away for an entire weekend, pack a nice picnic lunch and enjoy time together in a lovely setting. You know from experience that she doesn’t expect anything elaborate, but she’ll love every minute of spending time with you.
2. Throw a party. Who says parties are reserved for birthdays? This would be a great time to collaborate with your brothers, sisters, cousins, and in-laws — the bigger the better. Throw a party celebrating all the moms in attendance with great food, music, and games. Make it an all-day affair with food and games during the day and a bonfire to top off the night.
3. Write it down. While the standard card with just your signature is so 2016, a more elaborate letter or card will melt mom’s heart. List important things she has taught you (she’ll love to know you were actually listening), things she did for you that you now do for your own children, or what you love most about her.
4. Recreate old family photos. This is a trend that you’ve probably noticed online. Find the funniest picture of you by yourself or you and your siblings when you were young and recreate it as adults. Have the two framed side-by-side for an awesome gift that will guarantee some side-splitting laughter at the next family reunion.
5. Give mom a hand. No, we don’t mean applause (although you can do that, too!). Surprise mom by doing a deep spring cleaning while she’s away, finishing that home improvement project she’s been talking about, or whipping up a gourmet meal.
]]>Whether you find it a necessary evil or you relish the thought of slipping into your bleach-stained sweats, spring cleaning is a great way to keep your home value high and your home and appliances fresh and free of allergens. For busy moms or the modern professional, these super cleaning tips will save you time and energy this spring!
1. De-clutter first. Clothes that don’t fit, kitchen appliances you haven’t used in 10 years, toys your kids have outgrown — these items are just taking up valuable space in your home. Hold a garage sale or head to the nearest donation dropoff to de-clutter your home. Get the kids involved to save time, and even use the donation drop-off as a teachable moment.
2. Take it room by room. Don’t try to do it all in one day. Once spring has sprung, try targeting one room each week. If you have the time and energy, consider taking everything out of the room (within reason) and moving items back in piece by piece. This will give you the opportunity to tackle the walls and floorboards while also dusting the backs and bottoms of large furniture items such as dressers, bedframes, and book shelves.
3. Hit the items and places that don’t get a lot of love. We know you have your regular weekly cleaning routine. You dust major surfaces, do laundry and run the vacuum cleaner. During spring cleaning, try to hit those spaces that don’t get the weekly rundown. Cleaning the oven, dusting the ceiling fans and shampooing the carpets aren’t particularly fun or sexy activities, but you’ll be glad to cross them off your list!
4. Utilize the wisdom of your fellow women. No doubt your mom, grandma, or aunt have a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to spring cleaning. Whether it is vinegar and a plastic bag over the shower head to remove buildup, a bowl of vinegar and lemon in the microwave for easy cleaning, or tips for deodorizing your mattress, call up the magic mavens in your life for seasoned advice.
5. Revitalize, rejuvenate, rearrange. Spring is a time of growth and rejuvenation. If you’re feeling a little lackluster at home, use this time to rearrange your furniture, repaint your bedroom or do something out of the ordinary. Spring is a great time to ditch that winter funk!
At the end of the day, simmer a pot of rosemary, lemon and vanilla extract on the stove to make your entire home smell amazing. This will be the perfect ending to a day (week or month) of hard work!
]]>If you’re counting down the days until Old Man Winter goes back into hibernation, then you know that spring is right around the corner! And after hitting the gym all winter, the outdoor maven in you is probably dying to get outside. The entire routine can become mundane and robotic: go to the gym, see “your” machine, sweat it out for an hour, go home and repeat. If your workouts have become a little lackluster, get yourself a better view! If you’re looking for new, unique ways to take your workout outdoors, look no further! Check out these amazing workouts that you can do alone or with your friends.
Ditch the treadmill, and turn any park into a gym by running, biking, hiking or walking outside. Take in the warm spring air, beautiful scenery of budding flowers, and occasional spring shower. Research shows that 30 minutes of cardio each day can increase heart and lung health and improve muscle mass, so grab the girls and get outside!
If you want to stay close to home, you can find exercise equipment in the most unexpected places. Take your strength training outside — you can do high knees, lunges, and squats right in your own backyard. Use your porch or patio stairs for step-ups or calf raises to tone your legs, or use a vacant park bench for triceps dips.
Are you more of a yoga maven? Work on your balance, toning, and Zen by grabbing your mat and enjoying a relaxing yoga session outdoors with nature as your soundtrack. Not only will you start your day more relaxed and focused, but yoga can also help lower blood pressure and decrease stress.
]]>For many avid anglers, fishing is a family affair. Make the most of your time together with the life lessons only fishing can teach!
]]>For many avid anglers, fishing is a family affair. As with any activity, parents can’t help but slip in a few sage words of wisdom or a few life lessons when their child is impatiently waiting for a bite or being tempted to leave trash at your favorite outdoor spot. Make the most of your time together with these life lessons only fishing can teach!
Inspiration and creativity can be found anywhere. If you’re a fly fishing fanatic, you may have already started teaching your tot to tie his or her own flies. While this may be a lesson in fine motor skills or hard work, it can also be a lesson in creativity. Allow your child the latitude to choose his or her own materials and create a beautiful (and hopefully effective) fly that will land you that big catch!
There’s beauty in solitude. In our fast-paced world, we are constantly connected and bombarded with information and noise. After a long week at work for you and a long week at school for your children, coming home to a weekend filled with more time in front of the computer or television is not always the best option. Fishing teaches kids to find solitude and beauty in the quiet reverence of nature. You can also take this opportunity to throw in old favorite such as “leave a place better than you found it” or “the early bird gets the worm.”
Be prepared. It’s not just a great song from “The Lion King.” Fishing teaches great lessons in preparedness, including planning ahead on what supplies you will need depending on which type of water you’ll be fishing in and what type of fish you’re trying to catch. Let your kid help pack the your gear or fix lunch before heading out! This is also a great opportunity to talk about teamwork.
Protect our environment. It's never too early to teach our children the importance of taking care of our planet. It can be a simple fish lesson like: keep 'em wet, or a conversation about conservation: protecting our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. Fly fishing is a lifetime sport and we want healthy water to pass on to future generations!
Most important enjoy your family time and have fun!

Hunting season isn't just for the boys. Tips for what to bring, how to dress and to be a safe maven!
]]>“Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you.”
If those classic lyrics resonate with you, you might be an outdoor girl. In America, hunting is one of the most popular pastimes, especially in rural communities — and it isn’t just for the boys. Turkey, deer, ducks — there is a quiet art to tracking and an accuracy to hunting that lends itself to the finesses of a maven. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been hunting your entire life, check out these tips from Maven Fly for your next hunting adventure.
Practice makes perfect. While hunting is more for fun that survival these days, carrying a loaded weapon is serious business. Most firearm deaths are accidental, and it is your responsibility as a licensed carrier to know all of the safety precautions associated with your device, whether you are using a gun or a bow. If you’re just starting out, make sure you spend ample time at the firing range and are comfortable with the ins and outs of your device before heading into the woods.
Take a hunter’s safety course. Most states require you complete a similar course before they will issue you a license, but if your state is more relaxed, take one anyway. Not only will this teach you to respect your weapon and surroundings, but it will also teach you the safest measures to make sure the other hunters around you are safe, as well.
Dress appropriately. Different animals are hunted at different times of year, so always make sure you are dressed accordingly. It’s hard to have fun if you are too hot or too cold. Also, be sure you are wearing clothing that make you recognizable to other hunters. If you are too concealed, your movements may be mistaken for an animal. Most states recommend blaze orange. Your Maven Fly garb will be perfect for duck or early turkey season because it is lightweight, water-resistant and breathable with built-in UPF.
]]>Explore your goals and embrace your maven moment by aspiring to be a better fly fisher, hiker, photographer and more!
]]>Lose weight. Eat healthier. Read more books. Go to the gym at least five times a week. Save more money. Watch less television.
New Year’s resolutions — we hear the same ones every year. And while the typical list is full of noble goals, they are very seldom met because they are rarely things we are passionate about. Start 2017 off right by exploring your passions. Once you have zeroed in on what really excites you, create real goals and embrace your maven moments by aspiring to hone your skills, whether it be fly fishing, hiking, photography, business, motherhood, music … the list goes on. Check out these tips from Maven Fly for setting goals, achieving them and being the ultimate maven.
Change your mindset. Most people fail at goal-setting because they are working toward goals for the wrong reasons. You shouldn’t try to change yourself for other people. A goal will most likely only be met if it is important to you. For example, if your 2017 resolution is to get in better shape so you can tackle a really tough hiking trail, do it for you. Do it because you want to take care of your body. Do it because you can’t wait to feel the high of that accomplishment as you step foot over the “finish line.”
Display your goals. Don’t let your goals fall by the wayside. If you’re setting a goal to learn a new fly fishing cast, write it down. Tack it up on your refrigerator, write it in your planner, or make a poster to hang in your office. No matter how you display your goals, having them in front of you every day is a great way to stay motivated.
Make time in your schedule. You can’t change yourself if you don’t change your routine. If your maven moment includes learning more about photography, you have to make time for that. Set aside 30 minutes every day to learn new settings on your camera, go out and shoot candid shots or stills, and read up on new techniques. If photography is what you’re passionate about, that time frame will likely expand.
Practice accountability. Tell someone else about your goal. Make sure it is someone positive who will support your dreams, because telling someone else will help keep you accountable.
Don’t be afraid to fail. Most New Year’s resolutions end before February starts because people are discouraged by failure. Those who set out to lose weight quit because they missed a day at the gym or ate three doughnuts for breakfast. However, failure is a part of life. Don’t call it quits just because of a small setback. Whether you’re learning a new instrument or refining your work/life balance as a working mother, it won’t be a home run every day. Keep dreaming!

A great cardio workout, hiking has been shown to lower the risk for heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, boost bone density, build strength (particularly in the glutes, hamstrings and the muscles in your hips and calves), help control weight, boost mood and strengthen your core — gorgeous views and fresh air are just a bonus!

2. Don’t skip the view. Don’t get so caught up in giggles and gossip that you miss out on the unique views provided by your landscape. Take time to reflect and enjoy a beautiful overlook or a colorful sunset.
3. Turn things up a notch. You can increase the intensity of your hiking workout by using a walking stick, which pushes your upper body muscles to work harder; increasing your walking speed or choosing more difficult paths. Be aware of your surroundings — trying to go too fast can end in disaster if you trip over a tree root or topple downhill!

Make sure you have plenty of materials for the fly tying race and plenty of line for the casting competition. Another great thing to invest in is cheap gold, silver and bronze medals for the winners!

4. Choose an impartial judge. Your friends don’t have to be fly fishing fanatics to enjoy the games. Invite your non-fishing friends to be the official judges. You can even make them score cards for added fun.
5. Make a night of it. An Olympic party is nothing without food and drinks. Make your favorite fish-themed appetizers (think shrimp cocktail, grilled scallops, lobster rolls or sushi), stock up on your favorite beer or wine and watch the opening ceremonies together!
