Christmas Island
Often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island is full of natural wonders. From the annual red crab migration to the rare bird species that call the island home, you will enjoy more than just fishing on an unforgettable trip to this Australian territory. One of the hottest spots for big fish in South East Asia, anglers will have access to sailfish, tuna, wahoo and other tropical species.
The Zambezi River
The fourth largest river in Africa, the Zambezi is full of coveted fresh water fish like the tiger fish. This presents an exciting challenge to fly fishers as the tiger fish is one of the fastest fresh water game fish and can weigh up to 30 pounds. Visit between June and August for the best weather and to avoid the rainy season.
Mongolia
Considered a “mega-trout,” taimen are on many fly fishing bucket lists. There are a variety of a rivers and waterways in Mongolia, and the taimen there can live up to 50 years. Reaching 60 inches, taimen spend their entire lives in small rivers instead of oceans or lakes.
The Firehole River
If you want to plan the trip of a lifetime, but you’d like to stay a little closer to home, consider the Firehole River in Wyoming. Known for brown and rainbow trout, the river is a beautiful 8,200 foot body that includes riffles, runs, white water and meadow water and starts in the southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park.
